I’ll Sleep When I’m Rich Or Dead

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the word, “HUSTLE”? Long days? No sleep? Lots of hard work and sacrifices? Money up the hoo-ha? When I think of the word HUSTLE, I think of success. Success from all of the hard work that I’ve done, the relationships I have created and the numberless days and nights of pushing myself to excellence. To HUSTLE means to do every single thing in your power to make something happen.

Almost every superstar, athlete, multi-millionaire, business mogul, etc., have built themselves up with a Hustler’s mentality. It takes a lot to stand out from the crowd, to make a name for yourself, to build a legacy.

Are you doing everything in your power to stand out? To build a legacy?

A few days ago, Rapper, Hip Hop Mogul, and Fashion Designer Kanye West went to Twitter and spoke from his heart. No rant, no shade, just a single tweet. A tweet that whether you love the man or not, we all should be inspired by.
Please: Do everything you possibly can in one lifetime.”

Kanye is many things and some of those things are not too good, but one thing anyone can take away from Kanye is the fact that he wants to do it all. Kanye has never been shy about his struggles in his career. From being looked over as a Rapper by his idol Jay-Z initially to his high-end fashion line “The Kanye West Collection” failing, Kanye has always had a niche to proving people wrong. Hustling, however, isn’t about trying to be better than others, it’s about being better than your yesterday, making a better life for you and for those you love.

Entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk wrote a blog post entitled, “A Hustler’s Mentality”, and in that post, he shared one very important thought: “Hustling is putting every minute and all your effort into achieving the goal at hand. Every minute needs to count.” So let’s say you have decided that you want to be a Pastry Chef. You enjoy baking pies, cakes and cookies and you really want to make a profession out of it. So what do you do? HUSTLE.

Whether you are baking a pie for an office retirement party or baking 30 cupcakes for a kindergarten class, you hustle. Make business cards, ask friends to tell their friends or even create a website and promote yourself like your life depends on it because it does. Dreams are implanted in us from a higher being. Something much greater has a plan for us all. It is our responsibility to use that gift to make a difference in the world. Creating a hustler’s mentality is accepting your life’s purpose and doing everything outside-the-box to see it be achieved.

So now that you understand what it takes to have a Hustler’s mentality, what do you do now?

Step# 1: Write it all out. Draw up a blueprint of Everything you want to accomplish, every dream that you want to make a reality. Write it all out on paper. Writing something down on paper is the strongest point of focus.

Step #2: Determine your short-term goals from your long-term goals. Short-term goals are goals that you want to accomplish in a short period of time/the near future. Long term goals are a little further down the line. Once you have determined which is which, then you can move on to step three.

Step #3: RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH. I can not stress that enough. Anything that you want to do, anything that you want to accomplish takes research. Author Zora Neale Hurston once said, “Research is formalized curiosity. It is poking and prying with a purpose.” It is your job to learn everything surrounding your purpose. If you want to go into business for yourself, look into Small Business. If you want to be a child care provider, take classes. You are making an investment in you. It is worth it.

Step #4: Look for people in the field that you are looking to get in. Network. Associate yourself with like-minded people who want the same goals as you do. When you meet people of the same circles, they can share with you information that can further your hustle. Always remember to share too.

Step 5: Never give up. Times will be hard and there will be moments when you will not want to continue. Keep going. Hustlers get doors closed in their faces all the time. What separates them from regular people, is that they keep going. The hardest time is always in the beginning and just when you are about to make a breakthrough. Keep going.

It’s a hustler’s ambition, close your eyes listen, see my vision. – 50 Cent (Hustler’s Ambition)
Draw your vision in your mind’s eye. Meditate on it, write out your plans, put your plans into tangible goals and take action. It is your vision from above and it is only you who can make that vision clear for the world to see. HUSTLE.
