On this day as we celebrate would be Dr. Maya Angelou‘s 90th birthday, we remember the beautiful testament of her love of words and her life. Maya Angelou passed away four years ago, however, like most legends, her words surpassed her time on earth.
I selected this video from the Oprah‘s Masterclass because it is something I needed to hear today, myself. “Be a Rainbow in Someone Else’s Cloud.” Most people don’t know how to be a blessing to others, other than to themselves. Some people don’t even know how to wish someone well wishes without the fear of dimming or diminishing their own blesses. It is sad when you really think about it.
In this short but very powerful video of Maya Angelou’s last moments, she talks about how kind people of all walks of life have been her to in the past, and how she carried them with her everywhere she went. She urges for us (whoever is listening to this message) to be the same way. Kind and respectful to one another. Sometimes it is not easy to be kind to someone who hasn’t been kind to you, it is hard because you feel as though you are being treated unfairly or tested to an extreme. But it is this message of Dr. Maya Angelou that I wanted to share because now is the time more than ever to be kind to each other. Your kindness (blessings) to someone can be kindness back to you.
In the last couple of days, I have been tested. Tested on how kind I could remain after I felt like I was treated unfairly. How I could stand true to my character without acting out on hurt and resentment. And in the days before I received all sorts of messages preparing me for what was to come. One of the messages that I received (via twitter of all places) was “Be Proactive, Less Reactive.” a message that meant more to me now than I expected it to.
So on this day, as we celebrate the life of Dr. Maya Angelou lets be kind to one another. Let’s show those who have hurt us or tried to dim our lights that you don’t have control over my feelings, my reactions or my life. I will continue to be a blessing in someone’s life, despite the odds against me. I will be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud.
