So in honor of celebrating the birthday of the GOAT also known as Q-Tip, I wanted to share one of my favorite videos from my childhood. Yes, I was too young to know or understand the true message behind the song, but that doesn’t take away the fact that it was a really good ass song.
It was on a Violators compilation CD that I heard the song for the first time and fell in love with it. I could not have been any older than 11 years old when the album dropped and it was at a time when you had to actually go to a record store and preview the album in the store. Yes, for my younger readers who could never imagine listening to music first without hearing it on the internet via iTunes, Apple Music or Spotify. There was a time when if you wanted to listen to something first, you would either wait for it to be played on the radio or go to the record store (The Wiz, Tower Records, HMV) and listen to it in person.
I followed Q-Tip’s career for as long as I can remember. From the days of ATCQ, although I was much younger when “Bonita Applebum“, “Can I kick it?“, and all of the other hits from ATCQ was released, but their music was always played in my house and I am very appreciative to have a mother who exposed her children to all types of music.
RELEASED: Directed by HYPE Williams, 1999.
