Last night during the annual Met Gala Ball held at the N.Y.C.’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, a dreamlike mixture of celebrities from music, film, and fashion, and art cascading on social media for the whole world to see. (Noticeably missing Beyonce!) This year’s theme “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”, was met with hits and misses that is left up for interpretation for all fashion ‘critics’ to make.
Rihanna: It is clear that Badgal Riri intended to steal the show yesterday as she stepped out onto the red (white) carpet. Donning a mitre, a hat worn by the Pope, Rihanna opted for a Margiela-designed dress and cape. Anna Wintour tapped Ms. Fenty as one of the celebrity hosts of this year’s event and she surely did not disappoint.
Lena Waithe: Emmy award-winning writer Lena Waithe stood out from the crowd with a message of love and equality for the books. Wearing a rainbow-flag cape designed by Carolina Herrera, among the sea of celestial gold and silver dresses, Waithe took the moment to make a bold move. Lena became the first black woman to win an Emmy award for comedy writing last fall and became the first person to wear a pride-flag cape to the Met Gala last night.
Chadwick Boseman and Jared Leto: Black Panther’s Chadwick Boseman and Thirty Seconds To Mars’ frontman Jared Leto KILLED it at the Gala last night. Boseman wore a highly embellished ivory cape with glistening gold shoes. The Versace three-piece suit best fit the theme, decorated with golden crosses. Jared Leto aka Jesus Christ in second coming came with his head in the game, sporting a powder blue blue Gucci suit with navy lapels that he paired with a pink pussy bow shirt. (This is what was stated!) Like Rihanna, Leto wasn’t afraid to go one step further, pairing his suit with a floral brocade stole that priests often wear. The Actor also wore a golden crown that sat on his flowing, shoulder-length hair.
Marvel VS D.C., anyone?
Cardi B & Baby Bardi: Appearing at her very first MET Gala, Cardi B, and baby Bardi represented for all Bronx bombers, mommies-to-be, and first-timers last night. Becalis came through drippin’ with a jewel-covered, bead-encrusted dress with a satin overskirt and headpiece, all designed by Moschino. She was joined by designer Jeremy Scott on the carpet tonight.
Frances McDormand: Maybe some of the attendees didn’t read the whole the invitation or maybe they were just having fun. But as much as some people hit the mark last night, some miss the target completely. Actress Frances McDormand stepped out with a custom Valentino gown with a very overwhelming headpiece. The teal cape gown overlayed atop yellow chartreuse pants number that made the outfit look– dare I say? Last minute.
Nicki Minaj: As much as Nicki has been crowned as the ‘Bad Guy‘, many people could clearly pick up who Nicki was supposed to be last night. However, the outfit was safe and completely let down for Nicki’s vibrant personality. The ‘Chun-Li’ rapper wore a bright red Oscar de la Renta gown with a bejeweled headpiece to fit a more sinful side for the theme. But it was a miss. Do better, Nicki.
Kendall Jenner and Kim Kardashian-West: As Kim and Kendall step out onto the white carpet with outfits that are best described as an anticlimax than anything else. Being beautiful isn’t enough when it comes down to following themes at the MET Gala, you either play big or go home. The Kardash-Jenner sisters didn’t even make it to the stadium. Kendall “play it safe” Jenner wore an off-the-shoulder ruched couture top with sheer elbow-length gloves and matching couture pants designed by Off-White creative director Virgil Abloh. Big Sister Kim looked like a living ‘Emmy Award’ in her chainmail Versace dress with crosses embroidered on her stomach and hip. The Cleopatra-like makeup look and liquid gold gown would have been a hit if Ancient Egypt was the theme. However, they both looked beautiful. Wrong, but beautiful.
