André 3000 Returns: A3K Drops Two Songs For Mother’s Day

As a mother and a Hip-hop fan, I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate my day than with two new songs from André 3000.

The Outkast member confirmed the songs when he joined Instagram with a new verified account. The songs “Me&My (To Bury Your Parents)” and the 17-minute “Look Ma No Hands,” features vocals from André and an instrumental jazz collaboration with James Blake. André also plays bass clarinet on both songs. The publication Pitchfork confirms that “Me&My” was written before the passing of both of his parents, however, it wasn’t recorded until three years ago. “Look Ma No Hands” was recorded late last year.

André lost his mother Sharon Benjamin-Hodo, just one day after his birthday in 2013. In two of his Instagram posts, he shared two text messages from the day before her death. “Happy Mother’s Day,” one of the captions reads. “I’m sure all the cards, dinners, flowers and last minute gifts are appreciated but I’ve learned the best gift a parent could get is to simply know their child is ok.” André lost his father Lawrence Walker less than a year later, in February 2014.

Me and my mother drivin’ to the grocery sto‘ / me ridin’ shotgun with my window rolled down,” he sings on “Me&My (To Bury Your Parents)”. “She smokes cigarettes and gets what she gets by hustlin’ harder / rollers and a nightgown.
