Yeezy Season: Kanye Puts Thoughts To Music With ‘Ye’ Album (Review)
Last night (May 31) Kanye West released (or re-introduced himself) his latest album ‘Ye‘ in the most grandiose way that Kanye could possibly think of, by flying all of his close family, friends, and entertainment peeps to a listening party in Jackson, Wyoming. The listening party streamed for the rest of the world who didn’t get an invite (or invite got lost in the mail…me) so we didn’t feel let out from the important people.
ye is the second release of a five-album series that are entirely produced by Kanye and he spared no feelings or kept no secrets as he spills some of his darkest thoughts (I thought about killing you) and personal experiences (Wouldn’t leave). Revealing a lot of the mystery behind him and his family, West even announces being diagnosed with ‘Bi-Polar Disorder‘ on the album art cover. Much has taken place since the return of Kanye on twitter back in March, whether it was in the public eye or in private. From the tweets of his dragon energy love for President 45 to his “Slavery was a choice” comment on TMZ Live, Kanye shows his most vulnerable side on this verbal diary.
Kanye shares many of his concerns about his children, especially his daughters on (Violent Crimes). Kanye reveals that he hasn’t always been good to the women in his life, but the fear of ‘Karma’ falling onto his two daughters North 4, and Chicago 5 months, scares him. ‘Til niggas have daughters, now they precautious / Father forgive me, I’m scared of the karma,” Ye discloses on the track featuring Ty Dolla $ign, 070 Shake and Nicki Minaj. “Cause now I see women as somethin’ to nurture / Not somethin’ to conquer.” He even jokingly hopes that his daughters are built like him and not like their mother Kim Kardashian on the ode to his daughters.”I pray your body’s draped more like mine and not like your mommy’s. Just bein’ salty, but niggas is nuts.”
‘Ye’ also gave us a sneak peek at what to expect on Kanye’s long-awaiting collaborative album with Kid Cudi. ‘Ghost Town‘ which originally appeared on a tracklist under ‘Kids‘ in a video that Kanye shared on his Twitter account features Cudi, PARTYNEXTDOOR, and 070 Shake. 070, a newcomer from New Jersey, signed with Kanye’s G.O.O.D. Music back in 2016. Born Danielle Balbuena, Shake is also featured on the track “Santeria”, from Pusha T’s 2018 DAYTONA album. “I’ve been tryin’, to make you love me,” Cudi croons with a husky and rough tone. “But everything I try just takes you further from me.” By the far, the most real part of the entire album was the possibility of Kim leaving Kanye. In what played out to be a love song “Wouldn’t Leave”, Kanye becomes sentimental over his love and loyalty for his wife, Kim. Ye revealed how Kim reacted to his controversial comment about slavery. “My wife callin’, screamin’, say, ‘We ’bout to lose it all!’,” He tells. “Had to calm her down ’cause she couldn’t breathe/Told her she could leave me now, but she wouldn’t leave.” Clearly, Kim and Kanye are still together, but the thought of Kanye being okay with his love leaving him is a scary one.
Kanye stepped up to the plate with this album, sharing his story on mental health, being a protective father, possible marriage woes and his political stance. He hit nothing but home runs with “Ye“.
