Model Adwoa Aboah On Kim Kardashian: She Is Neither An Icon Nor An Influencer
Last night (June 4) during the CFDA’s awards, Kim Kardashian-West was presented with the inaugural Influencer Award. If you aren’t too familiar with the CFDA’s awards, think of it as what the Grammys is to music, but only fashion. It is evident that a lot of people underestimate the powers that be when it comes down to Kim and her influence on social media. And while many of the audience members were impressed by Kim receiving the award, supermodel Adwoa Aboah was not.
The shade of it all, all stems from an Instagram post from fellow model Winnie Harlow, who shared a picture of herself and Kim, congratulating her on receiving the prestigious award.
One of the realist and most down to earth people in any industry I’ve ever been around, I always Love being around you. Thank you for being you. If anyone understands not initially being accepted in an industry you adore like I do, it’s you! And now the Influencer Award at the @cfda ‘s?!? No one can ever take that away from you! Keep inspiring woman around the world to be themselves Unapologetically. Against every naysayer you’re you and I adore your strength 🙏🏽❤️ love you @kimkardashian Congratulations!
However, not long after, Aboah expressed her disapproval of Kim receiving the award, writing, “Is this a joke babe…In what world has she inspired women to be themselves? She is no icon nor an influencer and I find it completely crazy that anyone would think she was.” Harlow quickly came to the defense of Kim, stating: “We’ve all been up against all kinds in these industries,” she writes. “I may not agree with everything anyone does but I show love where I feel its due…and a woman being herself against everything is admirable.” She concludes that she’s done “dumb things,” too, but learned from the mistakes. “There are negatives to everything but… she’s a great human being.”
Kim responded to the post several hours later, thanking Harlow for the congratulatory message, ignoring the initial statement from Aboah.“This is the sweetest message!” she wrote. “I appreciate it so much! And you have helped me in more ways than you know. Love you!”
Kim was considered for the award after The Council of Fashion Designers of America, Inc. took notice to the several successful fashion and beauty brands that Kardashian owns, including Kids Supply, Kimoji, KKW Beauty, KKW Fragrance, and her own website kimkardashianwest.com.
Aboah may not understand why Kim received the award, however, Tommy Hilfiger does.
