Traveling the world alone can give you a completely different experience when compared to travelling with a friend or even with family. Sure, you need to be more aware of your surroundings but on the flip side, you are also given the chance to do whatever you want to do without limitations.
There’s nothing better than being able to go on an all-inclusive trip, knowing that it is fully paid for. If you are constantly worried about having to clear your debt when you get home or paying for meals when you’re there, then this will almost certainly impact your experience and you may even find that you are not able to enjoy yourself as much either. You should also make the effort to create a budget. If you do this then you won’t overspend, and you will also find it way easier to make good decisions when you are on vacation too.
Decide on your Destination
Choosing the right destination really is so important. It doesn’t matter whether you have a dream destination or whether you just want to get away because you have to make sure that the location you choose is suited to solo travel. If you plan on going on any tours when you get to your location, then it’s worth booking these in advance so you can book a hotel nearby. This will save you from having to rely on public transport too much and it will also help you to feel more comfortable as you won’t have to travel as far when going sightseeing too.
Take out Travel Insurance
Don’t think you need travel insurance? Think again. When you travel alone, you need to have some degree of protection because you never know how much it is going to cost to get someone to come out to your location should you end up in a hospital. It also gives you peace of mind if you are taking part in any extreme activities too, so make sure that you keep that in mind.
Protect your Identity
If you know that you are going to be using public WiFi on the road then you need to use a VPN where possible. This will help to protect you if you ever enter any bank details and it will also help you to keep your personal information more secure.
Adapt to your Destination
Traveling in a new city alone can be a daunting experience, to say the least. If you want to help yourself here, then you need to take a day to relax and settle in. If you don’t then you may end up feeling overwhelmed and you may also find it difficult to enjoy your vacation to the full. You also need to remember that if you are unsure of yourself at any time, ask for help. If you stand around looking dazed then this won’t be doing you any favors, and if you are in a city with a high crime rate then it may even make you a target.
Study a Map
It’s always a good idea for you to have a map. When you do, you will easily be able to know your destination and you will also get a much better sense of direction too. Sure, having a phone can be helpful but if it dies then you may be left stuck. A lot of tourist cities have information points where you can pick up miniature maps and they can give you a good idea of where the major landmarks are too.
Take the Essentials
You have to make sure that you pack essentials that are really going to help you on your trip. This could include pain relief, sunscreen and even some sexual protection such as Durex. Sure, you will probably be able to buy things like this when you arrive, but you may end up paying more and in some countries, you may find that it’s just not as accessible as you’d think. For example, if you’re traveling to France then you’ll soon find that most supermarkets don’t actually stock pain relief. Instead, you’ll need to go to a pharmacist, which might be a bit out of the way.
Being on your Own Doesn’t Mean that you Have to Be Lonely
Just because you’re traveling on your own, doesn’t mean that you need to be lonely. When you smile, you are essentially saying the same thing in every language. The more approachable you can make yourself, the more likely you’ll be to connect with other people and make some friends at the same time. It even helps to learn a couple of words in the local language too. This will be much appreciated and it will even be returned with the effort of them trying to speak in your language too.
Always Establish your Own Routine
It helps to have a routine when you are traveling abroad. You need to visit the same café, stall or even restaurant every single day. When you do, you’ll get to know people and you may even find that they watch out for you as a result too. If you are having a hard time knowing what local cafes are good for solo travelers, then consider talking to your hotel staff. They know the area better than anyone and they may even be able to arrange transport for you too. If you continually try and dine in the same restaurant then this will make you more comfortable too. The best time for you to dine is at noon. The prices are cheaper, and you won’t be surrounded by couples having romantic meals.
Take a Day Tour if Possible
Day tours are brilliant ways for you to meet new people. You can ask them questions and you will already have similar interests because you are both on the same tour. You can also talk with people as you wander around museums too, as they will probably have a keen interest in the same exhibits that you are viewing.
