When we are growing up, there is a massive range of options that will come up. And at that point, we probably want to be an astronaut in the morning, a vet in the evening, and a doctor at the weekends. And let’s not forget we have 55 dogs and some ponies for good measure.
Over time some, if not all, of those dreams slowly change. Because reality slowly creeps in. Then before you know it, you have graduated from university. Life happens while you are making other plans. And it is often the case that we land in a job, and years later, we finally stop to consider if that is the job we really wanted – or is it time to start dreaming again?
So let’s dream big, and head out on a quest to find your perfect job.
Think about a couple of companies that, for some reason, just seem to sing to you. Make a list of ten companies that you think you want to work for. Do some in-depth research about their employee size, the company history, and some of their press – both good and bad.
You can take some time to see what people are saying about them on LinkedIn too. See what job openings they have and where you actually might fit in. You might find that they don’t have their careers on their own website, but they work with specialists like Cornerstone Medical.
Although we touched on LinkedIn, you can get a feel for the company on a whole new level by checking out their social media pages. This will usually give you an insight into the brand as a whole. Their social media team will have guidelines about the tone and language they will use. Depending on the style and the company in question, it can be worth beginning to engage with them. Make sure that your own profiles are ready for a glance if any of the employees choose to do so.
This is where you can start working your LinkedIn profile a little harder. After you have been browsing the people that work in a similar field in the company that you can see yourself in, send an introductory message, and see if you can ask a few questions about the company, and if possible, some of the work they do. If they have some published work or some projects that you are inspired by, be sure to mention that too.
Leave the ball in their court, and most often, people will get back to you. After all, they were once in your position.
Make your CV match what they are looking for and need in recruits. You can’t be sure if it is a person or machine reading your resume, so without stuffing the keywords in there, lead them to see how perfect you are for the role that you are applying for.
And, when in doubt, check for job titles that are similar to what you are considering applying for because often that can be a great option too.
